<p>The 165th AS is the wing's flying component and has operated the C-130H since 1992. The 165th Fighter Squadron formed in February 1947 with P-51Ds and was called to active service between October 1950 and July 1952. The unit converted to the F-84E and deployed to RAF Manston, UK in November 1951 before returning to state control and taking up the F-51H, and soon after the F-51D. It re-equipped with the F-86A in late 1956 before being redesignated the 165th TRS in 1958, with the RB-57A. The 123rd TRG was formed in October 1962. The RF-101G/H was assigned in July 1965 and the unit was called to active duty from January 1968 to July 1969 with deployments to Itazuke AB, Japan as well as to Alaska and Panama. The squadron switched to the RF-101C and converted to the RF-4C in 1976, with the 123rd TRG being upgraded to Wing status. The unit became a Tactical Airlift Squadron and had the C-130B assigned in January 1989.
